Most everyone would like to own the latest technological gizmos but lack the financial resources to buy the newest electronics. One way around the high price tag is buying refurbished, or factory reconditioned, merchandise when it finds it way back to a retailer’s shelves.
Items are returned to the manufacturer for a variety of reasons such as not working when it was bought, broke within the manufacturer’s warranty period or a customer found out they couldn’t afford to pay the credit card bill and returned it to get their money back, just claiming it doesn’t work. To minimize losses, a company will often inspect the item, fix whatever is wrong, make sue it works and meets the original specifications and sell at as factory reconditioned.
In some cases, a refurbished electronics item may be a better buy that a new one out of the box. There are many automated steps in the manufacturing process and occasionally a connection may not be made correctly, but it won’t show up for a week or two, or even for several months, depending on the frequency of use and the defect. A factory reconditioned item usually has all of the defects repaired before it goes back on the market, selling as a reconditioned item.
Under the law a refurbished item must be clearly marked as having been reconditioned and usually cannot sell at the same price as a new item. Many of the factory reconditioned electronic items such as computers, radios, CD/DVD players or handheld data assistants are as good as, or better than new and will typically carry the same manufacturer’s warranty as a new one has. The biggest difference is the price, often discounted as much as 50 percent.
To improve the customer’s comfort level in buying reconditioned merchandise, as well as to reduce claims after the sale, some stores that sell remanufactured electronics, will have the customer test the item before they buy it, to insure it works properly. Computers, especially laptops can be booted up and, if the store owner believes the customer will buy it if it works, allow them to play with it until they are satisfied of its working condition.
This helps the buyer understand that factory reconditioned doesn’t mean it was broken to begin with, it means that while there may have been a defected, it has been inspected, repaired and fixed to make it work like new. It also prevents the return of the item from a buyer who claims it didn’t work when they got it home.
With the higher cost of electronic goods just hitting the market and in some areas reduced income levels, buying factory refurbished merchandise offers customers the opportunity to own the latest technology at a greatly reduced price.
