Buy Refurbished Merchandise With Eyes Wide Open

The prospect of getting a brand name product at half price or less can be very appealing, especially for high-end products, and buying factory reconditioned merchandise can often save big bucks. However, when considering the purchase of refurbished merchandise, buyers need to look past the price tag and completely understand what it is they are getting for their money.
Most manufacturers operate a refurbishing program to reduce the amount of losses on returned merchandise. In most cases a company offers a return guarantee with so many days from the date of purchase and retailers can send the items back to the company if a customer returns it for a reason other than they didn’t like the color. When the manufacturer inspects the item they choose whether it is worth fixing and reselling at a reduced price, because it is used, or throwing it away if the cost of repair will eat up any potential profit.
Most consumers understand what a scratch and dent sell is offering, or display models off the shelf. Many believe that factory reconditioned means the original manufacturer has thoroughly inspected and tested the merchandise to insure it works properly. If defective parts are isolated, they are replaced and the item is in at least as good a condition as brand new merchandise. Sometimes better, since defective parts have already been located and replaced.
Saving money is one of the main reasons for buying refurbished merchandise, sometimes called factory reconditioned or other name to indicate it is not brand new, but when making a purchase of new-again items make sure the warranty is similar to the manufacturer’s warranty on new merchandise. Very few companies offer a warranty on remanufactured goods that is less than their new warranty. Just because it is in a brand new box, doesn’t mean it is free from defects of parts and manufacturing and even reconditioned merchandise can break and have to be returned.
If possible, try to determine if the item was reconditioned at a manufacturer’s facility or at a third party reconditioning factory. Either way, when it is reconditioned it has to meet the specifications of new merchandise when it comes off the assembly line. It may also be possible the merchandise never left the retailer’s back room. It may have been a shelf display, came out of a damaged box or has a cosmetic blemish that eliminates it from being sold as new.
Although reconditioned merchandise is required by law to carry that notice, some retailers will sell off-the-shelf merchandise as reconditioned instead of open displays simply because they plugged it in and it worked. Very few stores participate in this practice, but if buying refurbished merchandise from a store rarely shopped, it may be a good practice to simply ask.

| Opinions Vary On Quality Of Refurbished Items |
| It’s a simple process, really when a person returns at item to the retailer because it wasn’t what they were looking for, or it didn’t work they way they thought it should. Sometimes it doesn’t work at all and they take it back for another one. The retailer then sends it back to the manufacturer to get their money back and everyone is happy. more |
